This is a frequently used procedure to examine the nature of a lump in the breast or, as a follow-up test to mammography to provide additional information.
The procedure uses sound-waves to image the breast and no prior preparation is required. During the scan, gel is placed on the skin and a sensor is moved across the breast, to produce an image on the monitor.
A bilateral breast ultrasound takes around 10 - 15 minutes. Aspiration of cysts and other lesions can also be carried out using ultrasonic guidelines.
The results of the ultrasound scan are with your referring doctor within 24 hours.
